President Bola Tinubu has been accused of prioritising political manoeuvres over governance as Nigeria heads towards the 2027 general elections.
Paul Ibe, media adviser to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, made the allegation during an interview on The Africa Settings Exchange Show.
According to Ibe, Tinubu has shifted focus to consolidating political power because his administration recognises the difficulty of securing victory in a free and fair contest.
“The current administration of President Bola Tinubu is majoring in minors. They should be focused on governance,” Ibe said.
He recalled that Tinubu had admitted in a meeting before embarking on a two-week vacation in Paris that his government had been “too focused on politics,” blaming opposition pressure for the distraction. But Ibe dismissed that explanation as disingenuous.
“The truth is that they are focused on politics because they know winning the election fairly in 2027 will be difficult. That is why they are resorting to gimmicks, including attempts to weaken opposition parties,” he alleged.
Ibe further linked Tinubu’s alleged tactics to the emergence of a new coalition spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has positioned itself as a broad opposition front ahead of 2027.
The Presidency has yet to respond to the claims.
