Afenifere urges Senate, AGF to probe Natasha’s sexual harassment claims against Akpabio

Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called on the Nigerian Senate and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) to establish the truth behind Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the group said the matter should not be swept aside simply because Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has returned to her legislative duties after a six-month suspension imposed by the Senate for alleged rule violations.

Afenifere stressed that fairness, justice, and Nigeria’s international reputation demanded that the issue be subjected to judicial and institutional scrutiny.

“For us, restoring her does not mean we should put all her claims behind us without subjecting them to judicial interpretation,” the group said.

Natasha’s suspension and return

The controversy began after Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, accused Akpabio of sexual harassment. The Senate later suspended her for six months, citing a breach of its rules of procedure.

Her suspension sparked widespread debate, with international media and parliaments reportedly taking interest in the scandal.

Now back in the chamber, Afenifere insists the matter should not end with her reinstatement. The group urged the AGF, Senate, and security agencies to thoroughly investigate her claims in order to “set the record straight.”

Call for truth and accountability

According to Afenifere, uncovering the facts is crucial not only for the individuals involved but also for Nigeria’s democratic integrity.

The organisation warned that ignoring the allegations without a proper judicial review risks eroding confidence in the Senate and damaging Nigeria’s global image.
