Fake News Endangering Nigeria’s Stability – Sultan of Sokoto Calls for Social Media Regulation

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged the Federal Government to introduce strict regulations to curb the spread of fake news on social media, warning that misinformation poses a grave threat to Nigeria’s peace and national stability.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Northern Traditional Rulers Council General Assembly in Birnin Kebbi, the monarch expressed alarm over how rapidly false information circulates online, often shaping public opinion and fueling tension.

“It is now time for the government to regulate social media in the country. The spread of fake news is dangerous and must be addressed,” the Sultan cautioned.

He described the unchecked dissemination of misinformation as a “national danger” that must be confronted before it escalates into deeper societal crises.

While commending the Nigerian military for their sustained fight against insecurity, the Sultan condemned the harsh criticisms often directed at the armed forces, emphasizing that their sacrifices should be appreciated rather than undermined.

“I strongly condemn some of the harsh words directed at our military because of certain setbacks. They are doing their best to restore security in many parts of the country. Such criticism does not help. Instead, it discourages those who are putting their lives on the line for our safety,” he said.

The monarch also credited the military’s ongoing operations for the relative peace that allowed the traditional rulers’ meeting to hold in Kebbi, reaffirming his support for continued collaboration between security agencies and local leaders to strengthen national unity and peace.
