The Plateau State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has thrown down the gauntlet to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, urging him to identify members of the party allegedly persuading him to abandon the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Governor Mutfwang had recently claimed that several APC leaders approached him to defect, but said he would only act according to divine guidance and the will of Plateau people who elected him.
“It is not a lie that they are putting pressure on me,” Mutfwang said. “But I told them that only two people would authorise me to change my party. One is the God of heaven, and the other is you, the people.
“So, those who are rejecting me for what I did not seek are only hiding their desires. The truth is that 60 to 70 per cent of APC members in the state would be glad to have us in their party. They are just biting their fingers because they know I won’t join them,” he added.
However, the APC dismissed the governor’s remarks as “self-denial.”
Speaking to reporters in Jos on Monday, the party’s acting publicity secretary, Shittu Bamaiyi, said Mutfwang’s comments were a distraction from what he described as the governor’s poor performance.
“If Mutfwang had delivered good governance and met the expectations of Plateau residents, there would be no need for such conversations about defection or political alignment,” Bamaiyi said.
The war of words adds to the growing political tension in Plateau, where both parties are already positioning themselves ahead of the next election cycle.
