Troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have arrested seven suspected cultists in a targeted operation that uncovered a cache of weapons and charms in Makurdi, Benue State.
The raid, conducted on October 30 in the North Bank area of the state capital, was part of intensified efforts by the military to tackle rising criminal activities and restore calm across the region.
According to Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, Acting Media Information Officer for OPWS, the troops recovered two locally made pistols, a cartridge, a 7.62mm ammunition round, an empty shell casing, a dagger, and several bags containing charms and other incriminating items.
The suspects are believed to be members of a cult group linked to incidents of armed robbery, drug trafficking, and violent clashes in Makurdi and neighbouring communities. They are currently in custody for further interrogation and prosecution.
Maj. Gen. Moses Gara, Force Commander of OPWS, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged them to maintain pressure on criminal networks threatening peace in Benue and adjoining states.
He also cautioned young people, particularly students, to steer clear of cultism and embrace discipline, patriotism, and peaceful means of resolving disputes.
Operation Whirl Stroke reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring lasting peace and stability in Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba states, vowing that “no criminal element will find a safe haven” within its operational zones.
