Former Nigerian lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has condemned calls for any form of foreign military intervention in Nigeria, insisting the nation must never be subjected to external aggression under any circumstance.
Reacting to recent comments attributed to former U.S. President Donald Trump, who reportedly described Nigeria as a “disgraced country,” Sani said such remarks were unacceptable and must be rejected by every patriotic citizen.
“My country is not a ‘disgraced country’ and will never be a ‘disgraced country’,” Sani wrote on his X page. “Anyone who is proud of the mother who gave him life in his ancestral land will not accept his land being called ‘disgraced’.”
The former senator urged President Bola Tinubu to strengthen national security and protect the dignity of Nigeria, stressing that the country must not rely on foreign powers to solve its internal challenges.
He argued that while Nigeria has battled terrorism and insecurity for over fifteen years, it has never colonised, invaded, or plundered other nations — a record he said stands in defence of its integrity.
According to Sani, Nigeria welcomes international partnerships aimed at fighting terrorism, but not foreign military intrusion.
“As a democrat, I respect the views of those who think otherwise,” he added. “But I will never share in the opinion of those who support foreign aggression—and I want history to record it that way.”
Sani reaffirmed his stance that the solution to Nigeria’s problems must come from within, urging citizens and leaders alike to defend the nation’s sovereignty and image.
