The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory has urged Nigerians to view former US President Donald Trump’s comments on alleged Christian genocide in Nigeria as a rallying point for peace and national unity rather than division.

Speaking on Tuesday, the Northern CAN Chairman, Rev. John Hayab, said Trump’s statement should inspire both Christians and Muslims to come together and demand decisive government action to end all forms of killings and religious intolerance in the country.

“Trump’s statement about Christian genocide in Nigeria should be an opportunity for peace-loving Christians and Muslims to unite and demand concrete action by our government to stop the killing of anybody because of religion or any form of identity,” Hayab said.

Trump had recently claimed that Christians in Nigeria were being persecuted, calling for global attention to what he described as ongoing religious violence. His comments sparked intense debate within and outside the country, drawing mixed reactions from religious and political figures.

Rev. Hayab, however, maintained that Trump’s words should not be interpreted as an attack on Nigeria but as an external reminder urging citizens to protect one another.

“If you choose to read President Trump’s statement with an open mind, you will simply hear the voice of a visitor who cares about you and wants you to do something serious to enjoy peace and unity in your country,” he added.

The cleric emphasized that sustainable peace could only be achieved if Nigerians rose above religious sentiments and worked collectively to ensure justice and security for all citizens.
