FIFA Suspends Nigeria’s NFF Election as Leadership Crisis Triggers Joint FIFA-CAF Review

FIFA and the Confederation of African Football have suspended Nigeria’s football federation electoral process following a deepening leadership crisis at the Nigeria Football Federation.

The intervention comes after the resignation of NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the NFF Executive Committee, throwing the federation’s leadership structure into fresh uncertainty.

In a joint intervention, FIFA and CAF said they would send an assessment mission to Abuja to examine the legal, governance, administrative and electoral implications of the crisis.

The global and continental football bodies have also directed the NFF to take no further steps in the ongoing electoral process until the assessment is completed. The directive effectively puts the September 27 NFF election on hold.

However, FIFA has made it clear that the suspension does not amount to a final decision on the future of the electoral process. The joint mission is expected to meet NFF officials, electoral bodies, football stakeholders and government representatives before making recommendations.

The latest development has also revived a wider debate about the future of football administration in Nigeria. The central question is whether the current crisis will lead to meaningful institutional reform or simply produce another change of personnel at the top.

In an OtownGist opinion published before the latest FIFA intervention, Sir FAN Ndubuoke argued that replacing administrators without changing the underlying system would amount to recycling rather than genuine reform.

Ndubuoke called for an independent audit and structural reconstruction of Nigerian football, covering governance, finances, elections, grassroots development, refereeing, women’s football and player welfare.

With the election now suspended, that argument has gained renewed relevance. The bigger test may not be who eventually takes control of the NFF, but whether the crisis can be used to build institutions capable of outlasting individual administrators.

For Nigerian football, the FIFA-CAF intervention could become another temporary transition or an opportunity for a fundamental reset. The outcome will depend on whether the process produces structural change rather than another cycle of leadership replacement.
