Political tensions in Edo State intensified on Tuesday as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) challenged Governor Monday Okpebholo to provide a transparent breakdown of the $250 million investment he announced after a trip to Glasgow.
The party said residents were increasingly uneasy over the claim, arguing that such a substantial figure requires clarity, accountability, and verifiable details. In a statement released in Benin City, PDP Publicity Secretary Daniel Osa-Ogbegie said the matter had become “a source of concern and embarrassment” for the state.
He also questioned what appeared to be a growing disregard for projects initiated under former governor Godwin Obaseki, insisting that the new administration must explain why several of them remain unattended.
Osa-Ogbegie said the PDP would intensify its scrutiny of Edo’s fiscal management, especially where transparency is lacking. While reaffirming the party’s respect for democratic institutions, he stressed that its ultimate loyalty is to the people of Edo State.
According to him, the PDP would back any initiative that genuinely improves the lives of citizens, but would resist policies it views as wasteful, oppressive, or misleading.
The statement also addressed growing accusations that Governor Okpebholo regularly resorts to verbal attacks on opposition leaders. Osa-Ogbegie cautioned that such behaviour diminishes the stature of the governor’s office and would no longer be ignored.
He urged the administration to elevate political discourse:
“Edo politics must rise above insults. Let us focus on the economy, infrastructure, fiscal management, and the welfare of our people rather than personal attacks,” he said.
Osa-Ogbegie added that if the government believes strongly in its policies, it should defend them with “facts and substance, not invectives.”
