Kcee explains why he rejected Flavour early in his career

Nigerian music star Kingsley Okonkwo, better known as Kcee, has opened up on his long-standing issues with fellow highlife singer Flavour, revealing why he once refused to sign him.

Speaking on Yanga FM Lagos, Kcee recalled their first meeting years ago when talent manager Soso Soberekon brought a young Flavour to him for a potential record deal. According to Kcee, he turned down the opportunity because he “didn’t see the potential” at the time.

The revelation resurfaces months after the pair clashed subtly on social media, following a post by Flavour that many interpreted as a dig at someone copying his style. Kcee fired back then, insisting no one could gatekeep Igbo cultural music and reminding Flavour that he joined the industry before him.

Despite the history, Kcee insisted he does not believe Flavour is angry over the rejected deal but suggested the friction may stem from what he described as “superiority issues” within the industry.

He said some colleagues underestimate him because he refuses to brag about his achievements or talent.

“Till now, I don’t understand the reason for his beef with me,” Kcee said. “When some people expect you to remain stagnant and you rise beyond their expectations, it becomes a problem.”

He added that many who once doubted him have since apologised, saying his work continues to silence critics.
