‘I Was Chased Off Stage for P-Square’ — Flavour Recalls Humiliating Moment That Fueled His Rise

Nigerian highlife star Chinedu Okoli, popularly known as Flavour, has opened up about one of the most embarrassing moments of his early music career, revealing how he was once forced off the stage to make way for the now-defunct music duo, P-Square.

Speaking during a recent podcast interview, the Ada Ada crooner recounted how he was performing at a nightclub as an up-and-coming artiste when the venue’s manager abruptly stopped his performance after P-Square arrived.

According to Flavour, he was instructed to end his set immediately so the famous duo could take over the stage.

“I was performing one time when P-Square came in, and the manager of the place told me to leave the stage immediately.

“I switched off my mic and went and sat down somewhere.”

The singer said the crowd’s reaction to P-Square left a lasting impression on him, as fans erupted in excitement the moment one-half of the duo, Paul Okoye, picked up the microphone and began performing their hit song, Temptation.

Flavour admitted he questioned why the audience treated them so differently despite being musicians in the same industry.

“Ladies were screaming and cheering wildly the moment Paul of P-Square took the mic and began singing Temptation.

“I was wondering whether it is not the same music we are all doing because I have been performing there and the crowd had never cheered me that way.”

Rather than allowing the incident to discourage him, Flavour said he used the experience as motivation to improve his craft and remain consistent in pursuing his dreams.

“I didn’t let the experience discourage me. Instead, I took it as a motivation to work harder and now we are here.”

Today, Flavour is regarded as one of Nigeria’s most successful indigenous musicians, with multiple hit songs, sold-out concerts across Africa and beyond, and a reputation as one of the leading ambassadors of contemporary highlife music.

His story serves as a reminder that setbacks and rejection can sometimes become the driving force behind future success.
