Security operatives in Benue State have arrested 41 suspected criminals during coordinated police raids on identified crime hotspots in Wurukum and Wadata, two densely populated areas of Makurdi, the state capital.
The operation followed intelligence reports pointing to rising criminal activity within the axis, prompting targeted action by the Benue State Police Command.
Confirming the development on Tuesday, the Command’s spokesperson, Edet Udeme, said the raids were carried out at Awe Street, Wurukum, and parts of Wadata, as part of sustained efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in the city.
“A raid of black spots was organised at Awe Street, Wurukum and Wadata, where 41 suspects were arrested and are currently undergoing screening,” Udeme said.
“Investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be communicated as necessary.”
The police action comes amid growing concern among residents over reports of robbery, abduction and other criminal activities in parts of Makurdi.
One resident, who described herself as a survivor of an alleged attempted abduction, told journalists she narrowly escaped danger while returning home late in the evening.
According to her account, she boarded a commercial motorcycle along the International Market–Wurukum route at about 8:30 pm after attending a religious programme. She alleged that the rider deviated from the agreed route, claiming he needed to buy fuel and later pick up a parcel around Awe Street.
She said she was eventually abandoned in the area, where she was confronted by a group of young men who allegedly seized her phone and attempted to force her into a nearby building.
The woman further claimed that several other young women were inside the house, some of whom appeared to be restrained—raising fears of an organised criminal operation.
The police have not independently confirmed the details of the account. However, security sources said such testimonies often contribute to intelligence gathering and help shape targeted surveillance and raid operations.
The Benue State Police Command said patrols have been intensified across known flashpoints in Makurdi, particularly areas previously linked to armed robbery, kidnapping and human trafficking.
The Command reassured residents of its commitment to public safety and urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies.
