Plateau Imam Who Saved 262 Christians During Deadly Attacks Dies at 90

Abubakar Abdullahi, the respected Imam of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State who gained international acclaim for protecting hundreds of Christians during violent communal clashes, has died at the age of 90.

His death was confirmed on Friday by his son, Saleh Abubakar, who said the cleric passed away on Thursday night at the Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos after a brief illness.

According to the family, Imam Abdullahi had battled heart-related complications for some time and died ten days after being admitted to hospital.

“He was initially diagnosed with a heart problem and had been going for routine check-ups,” his son said. “His health was unstable after the diagnosis.”

Imam Abdullahi became a symbol of courage and interfaith unity in June 2018, when violent, faith-based clashes swept through at least ten communities in Barkin Ladi. As attacks intensified, he opened his mosque and personal residence, sheltering 262 Christians and protecting them until calm was restored.

His actions were widely praised across Nigeria and beyond, at a time when Plateau State was reeling from repeated cycles of communal violence that claimed lives and displaced families.

In recognition of his bravery and commitment to peace, the United States Department of State awarded him the International Religious Freedom Award in 2019, honouring his extraordinary act of humanity and moral leadership.

The late cleric is survived by 19 children — 12 sons and seven daughters.

He is to be buried on Friday in his hometown of Nghar village, following Juma’at prayers, as tributes continue to pour in for a man remembered for choosing compassion over division at one of the state’s darkest moments.
