Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has called on opposition parties, including the PDP and ADC, to mobilize mass protests against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for resisting the electronic transmission of election results.
Amaechi accused the APC of attempting to dominate the electoral process out of fear of losing future elections, arguing that opposition unity is essential to protect democracy.
“I believe that the opposition parties should come out—PDP, ADC, everybody should be out—to protest against the attempt of one party,” Amaechi said.
Opposition Pushback Against APC
Amaechi dismissed claims that such demonstrations could be “hijacked” by opposition forces, pointing instead to the APC’s own track record.
“If we come out, and they say the opposition has hijacked the protest, what is APC doing? Are they not hijacking? What are they afraid of? I thought they said they have 31 governors. Tinubu is not Jonathan. The only way a good politician will know he has done well is by the people,” he added.
He questioned why the ruling party would feel threatened despite its numerical advantage, citing several governors and high-profile defections from opposition parties. Amaechi also expressed skepticism that Senate President Godswill Akpabio or President Bola Tinubu would address citizens’ concerns, asserting that civil society and opposition groups would continue to push back until electronic transmission is implemented.
Tense Security at National Assembly
As protests escalated, security was heightened around the National Assembly on Tuesday. Police blocked major access roads ahead of an emergency plenary session scheduled by the Senate, signaling concerns about potential demonstrations.
The ongoing protests are being coordinated by human rights activist Aisha Yusuf, in collaboration with civil society organizations, which began the movement on Monday to demand transparency and fairness in Nigeria’s electoral system.
