The camp of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has described the outcome of the recent elections in the FCT and Rivers State as a major setback for the opposition, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Lere Olayinka, spokesperson to the FCT minister, made the remarks while reacting to the results of Saturday’s polls.

APC Wins in Rivers By-Election

According to Olayinka, the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the two Rivers State House of Assembly seats contested during the by-election underscores Wike’s political influence.

Writing on Facebook, he argued that the results reflected what he described as the “class and purpose” demonstrated by the minister during the electoral process.

“Wike deserves the accolade because he showed class and purpose in the polls in FCT and Rivers. APC cleared the two House of Assembly seats contested for in the Rivers by-election. How else can a politician prove his mettle?” Olayinka wrote.

‘Wike’s Victory Is Opposition’s Loss’

Olayinka maintained that the results were a clear statement about the standing of the ruling party and the strength of what he termed the “real opposition.”

“Wike’s victory is the loss of the opposition, especially ADC. Trust him to rub it in. He said the outcome of the poll was a clearcut statement on the status and stature of ‘the ruling party and the real opposition’,” he added.

The minister, according to his spokesman, also challenged members of the ADC-led coalition to reassess their political strategy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“He was in his usual manner needling and calling out the ADC ‘coalitionists’ to see the handwriting on the wall ahead of the 2027 elections, and give up the fight. I do not think they will give him the joy of being called chicken-hearted,” Olayinka stated.

The remarks add a fresh layer to the political contest in Rivers State and the FCT, as parties begin positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.
