Adamu Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has resigned as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development in Adamawa State, citing personal reflection and careful consideration. His resignation follows Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a resignation letter dated March 2, 2026, and addressed to Governor Fintiri, Adamu described his tenure as an honour and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the state’s infrastructural growth.

“It has been a rare honour and privilege to serve under your visionary leadership and to contribute, in my modest capacity, to the infrastructural growth and development of our dear state,” he wrote.

He also thanked the people of Adamawa State for their support during his time in office. “I remain profoundly grateful for the confidence and trust Your Excellency reposed in me throughout my tenure… I also extend my sincere appreciation to the good people of Adamawa State for their understanding, prayers, and support during my time in service,” the letter added.

Adamu’s resignation comes after he opted not to join Governor Fintiri and 22 other commissioners in defecting to the APC on February 27, 2026, underscoring a clear political divergence. The commissioner concluded his letter with a prayer for the governor’s continued success in service to the state.

Political analysts suggest that Adamu’s departure highlights emerging fissures within Adamawa’s political landscape as party realignments reshape the state government ahead of upcoming elections.
