Plateau Communities on High Alert as COCIN Chairman Warns of Islamist and Bandit Attacks

Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, Regional Chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, has issued a stark warning over potential attacks by Islamist extremists and Fulani bandits targeting rural communities after the upcoming Muslim Ramadan period.

Social media posts allegedly circulated by extremists indicate plans to escalate violence in response to recent killings in Riyom and Barkin Ladi local government areas.

Communities Preparing for Potential Violence

Speaking on his X handle on Tuesday, Rev. Dachomo stated that while past attacks had left local residents vulnerable, measures are now being taken to anticipate and repel future assaults.

“The Islamist terrorists said that after their fasting, they would come for us and resume the killings. But this time, we will be ready for them. They have already brought in more armed Fulani mercenaries from Sokoto and other states to fight and kill us,” he wrote.

The cleric stressed that predominantly Christian rural communities in Plateau State cannot remain passive in the face of threats, particularly given perceived lapses in protection from security agencies.

Heightened Tensions in Plateau

Rev. Dachomo’s warning highlights growing insecurity in Plateau, where recurring attacks by armed bandits and extremist groups have left rural populations on edge. Residents and community leaders are reportedly organizing local defensive measures to safeguard lives and property while calling for more proactive government intervention.

The situation underscores the ongoing challenges of security and protection in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, particularly for vulnerable rural populations.
