Abuja, Nigeria — Political tensions in Rivers State took a new turn on Tuesday as Senator Ipalibo Banigo, who represents Rivers West Senatorial District, formally announced her defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Banigo made the declaration during plenary at the Senate on Tuesday, informing lawmakers of her decision to leave the opposition party after years of political association with the PDP.

Her resignation letter was read on the Senate floor by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Banigo cites alignment with Fubara and Tinubu

In the letter, the former Rivers State deputy governor said her decision was influenced by the need to align with the political direction of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara as well as the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to her, the move would enable her to contribute more effectively to the development of Rivers State.

Banigo explained that the decision did not come lightly, noting that she had engaged in wide consultations with her constituents and political associates before making the final call.

Consultations with constituents

She told the Senate that discussions with stakeholders across her senatorial district shaped her decision to cross over to the APC.

Banigo added that the consultations convinced her that the move would better position her to support policies and initiatives aimed at advancing development and governance in Rivers State.

Her defection marks another significant political development in Rivers State, where shifting alliances and power struggles have continued to reshape the state’s political landscape.

Political observers say the move could further influence party dynamics in the state ahead of future political contests.
