The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied reports that Bauchi State Governor and chairman of the party’s Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, is planning to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speculation emerged on Sunday suggesting that Mohammed was preparing to leave the PDP for the APC, raising concerns amid a wave of recent defections. Over the past year, the PDP lost 10 governors to the APC, including Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, who switched allegiance following the Appeal Court’s annulment of last year’s national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State. That convention had established Kabiru Tanimu Turaki’s leadership of the PDP.
Comrade Ini Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the Turaki-led PDP, dismissed the rumours, stressing that Mohammed had repeatedly affirmed his commitment to the party. “Even in conversations with our national chairman, he insisted that he remains a member of the PDP,” Ememobong said. He added that the governor has expressed his comfort within the party in multiple forums, leaving the source of the rumours unclear.
Ememobong also addressed ongoing reconciliation talks within the party, noting that discussions are progressing among stakeholders. “These talks are guided by agreed strategies, and the work of the reconciliation committee will remain an internal matter to avoid escalation,” he said.
The PDP continues to navigate internal disputes following the court verdict and is seeking to maintain unity among its governors and national leadership.
