Cross River authorities intercept illegal arms shipment, raising concerns over public safety.
Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have apprehended a suspected gun runner carrying 850 live rounds of ammunition in Cross River State.
The arrest occurred early Tuesday during a covert operation, following credible intelligence on the illicit movement of firearms in the region.
Sources within the DSS said the suspect was intercepted while transporting the ammunition to an undisclosed location. Authorities believe the bullets were intended for criminal activity, highlighting potential threats to community safety.
“The arrest followed credible intelligence on the movement of illegal arms in the area,” DSS sources said.
The recovered items consist of 850 live bullets, which are now in the custody of the DSS as investigations continue.
The suspect has been taken into DSS custody for further interrogation. Officials are actively working to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged arms network.
Security experts note that such operations are critical in disrupting the flow of illegal weapons that could be used in violent crimes across the state.
This arrest comes amid growing concerns about arms trafficking and rising insecurity in parts of Nigeria. DSS officials have urged communities to report suspicious activities to prevent criminal networks from operating unchecked.
