Oyo School Kidnap: Federal High Court Sentences Three Terrorism Suspects to Life Imprisonment

Three men linked to the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State’s Oriire Local Government Area have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

Justice Salim Ibrahim handed down the sentence after convicting the defendants over their involvement in activities connected to the kidnapping that shocked the state and sparked nationwide concern over school security.

The convicts — Abdulrazak Umar, also known as Abu Khalifa or Abu Khalid; Yunusa Musa, alias Yunusa Bin Musa; and Shamsu Adamu Sani, also known as Abu Itisar — were prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The trio faced a 10-count charge but admitted guilt to several counts during the trial, including Counts Four and Six. The court found them guilty of offences related to their association with a proscribed terrorist group and concealing information about the activities of the bandits responsible for the school abduction.

Justice Ibrahim subsequently convicted the defendants and sentenced each of them to life imprisonment for their roles in the criminal activities.

The prosecution told the court that the three men were associates of the bandits who carried out the kidnapping of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, an incident that heightened concerns about insecurity and attacks on educational institutions.

The judgment marks a significant development in the prosecution of suspects connected to the high-profile kidnapping, as security agencies continue efforts to apprehend other individuals linked to the attack.

Authorities have maintained that investigations into the abduction are ongoing, with efforts focused on dismantling criminal networks responsible for kidnappings and other terrorist-related activities across the country.
