MURIC Condemns Borno Bombings, Urges Defence Minister to Act Amid Rising Casualties

Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on Defence Minister General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd) to take urgent measures to halt the escalating killings of civilians, following three deadly explosions in Maiduguri, Borno State on Monday.

The attacks left at least 23 people dead and over 100 injured, highlighting persistent security challenges in Nigeria’s Northeast.

In a statement signed by MURIC Executive Director Professor Ishaq Akintola, the human rights group described the bombings as “worrisome” and criticized what it termed inconsistent performance by Nigerian security agencies in Borno.

“This is quite worrisome. The toll is too high, and the level of coordination is highly challenging. But what is most baffling is the roller-coaster stance of the Nigerian security agencies in Borno State, which at one time tends to give positive progress and regression at another,” the statement said.

MURIC emphasized that Muslims in the Northeast and Northwest remain disproportionately affected by violent attacks. “The North is being decimated. Something must be done, and quickly,” the statement added.

The group charged General Musa to fulfill his promise of safeguarding Nigerians, stressing: “Life has become very cheap under his watch. Nigerians are not safe.”

The bombings mark another tragic chapter in the ongoing security crisis in Borno, raising renewed calls for decisive action to protect civilians and restore public confidence in Nigeria’s security apparatus.
