Nigerian troops have arrested 98 suspected illegal miners during a coordinated operation in Gwagwalada, as authorities intensify efforts to curb unlawful mining activities in the Federal Capital Territory.
The operation was carried out by personnel of the 176 Guards Battalion under Operation MESA, following actionable intelligence on illegal mining activities in the area.
Security analyst Zagazola Makama disclosed the development in a post on X, noting that the raid took place at about 5:55 p.m. on March 23.
According to the report, troops stormed the illegal mining site and apprehended the suspects without any resistance.
The large-scale arrest highlights growing concerns over illegal mining operations, which authorities say pose environmental, economic and security risks.
A range of equipment believed to have been used for the illegal activities was recovered at the scene. These include a vehicle, eight motorcycles, five pumping machines, 27 shovels, seven sledgehammers, 22 diggers, three head pans, five mining mats, and a sack of charcoal.
The suspects have since been handed over to the Guards Brigade Provost Group for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The crackdown forms part of broader security efforts within the Federal Capital Territory to tackle illegal resource exploitation and enforce compliance with mining regulations.
