Kano is abuzz as former governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, officially prepares to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC). Top party figures and national political leaders have flocked to the state to receive him amid widespread fanfare.
Kwankwaso formally resigned from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) on March 29, citing the need for a strategic realignment in response to Nigeria’s shifting political landscape.
Already in Kano are several high-profile figures: ADC National Chairman David Mark, former Speaker of the House of Representatives Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, former APC National Chairman John Odigie-Oyegun, and ex-Anambra governor Peter Obi. Former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi also arrived, welcomed by Kano’s former Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
Kwankwaso is set to receive his ADC membership card today, marking the formal start of his tenure in the party. Prominent senators, including Marafa and Ahmad Babba Kaita, alongside northern political figures, are coordinating the event to ensure a smooth entry.
Thousands of supporters gathered at Kwankwaso’s Kano residence, waving ADC flags and chanting solidarity songs, signaling strong public enthusiasm for the move. Meanwhile, Kano Central Senator Rufai Sani Hanga and former APC governorship candidate Dr. Nasiru Gawuna held strategic meetings to finalize the arrangements.
Kwankwaso’s defection represents a significant political shift in northern Nigeria, potentially reshaping alliances ahead of upcoming elections.
