Political tensions within opposition parties in Kebbi State are creating fresh opportunities for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which says it is already benefiting from growing divisions ahead of the 2027 elections.
The APC believes the internal crises rocking both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) could weaken their structures and drive more defections into its ranks.
Issa Abubakar-Asalafi, spokesperson of the APC in the state, said the party is closely monitoring developments, describing the disputes within opposition camps as a strategic advantage.
Recent political shifts have already reshaped the landscape, with the PDP losing key figures, including its 2023 governorship candidate, Aminu Bande, who defected to the ADC.
However, the ADC itself is not immune to instability, as it continues to grapple with factional disagreements over leadership within the state.
According to Abubakar-Asalafi, such internal divisions could significantly undermine the opposition’s ability to mount a credible challenge in future elections.
“Politics is a game of numbers, and parties must put their houses in order before challenging a ruling party,” he said.
He added that the APC remains confident of consolidating its dominance in Kebbi, expressing optimism about securing a strong mandate in the 2027 polls.
The party also pointed to a broader wave of defections as evidence of its growing influence, noting that all three senators elected under the PDP, along with several members of the House of Representatives, have since joined the APC.
Abubakar-Asalafi argued that the movement of high-profile politicians reflects increasing confidence in the ruling party’s leadership and governance in the state.
He further suggested that more defections could follow as political realignments continue ahead of the next general elections.
Despite the advantage, the APC spokesperson urged opposition parties to resolve their internal disputes, warning that prolonged disunity could weaken democratic competition and limit voter choice.
As political alignments begin to shift, Kebbi State is shaping up to be a key battleground where party unity — or the lack of it — could determine the outcome of the 2027 elections.
