Political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections are already taking shape in Ogun State, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) throwing its weight behind President Bola Tinubu for a second term and naming Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola as its preferred governorship candidate.
The decisions were reached during a high-level caucus meeting held at the party’s state secretariat, signalling a coordinated effort to solidify internal unity and present a clear political direction ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, who leads the party in the state, said the move to adopt a consensus candidate was deliberate, aimed at strengthening cohesion within the party while addressing long-standing political imbalances in the state.
He explained that the choice of Adeola, who represents Ogun West Senatorial District, was also driven by a desire to end the region’s decades-long exclusion from producing a state governor.
According to the governor, consultations had been ongoing for months, involving key stakeholders and top party figures, including President Bola Tinubu, to ensure broad acceptance of the candidate.
Abiodun said leading aspirants from Ogun West had agreed to step down and support a single candidate, describing the development as a breakthrough in the district’s political history.
“Nothing will give me more joy than to break the 50-year-old jinx and ensure Ogun West produces the next governor,” he said while unveiling Adeola as the party’s flagbearer.
He added that competence, political strength, and financial capacity were among the criteria used in selecting the candidate, noting that governorship contests require significant resources and strategic backing.
The governor also pointed to the party’s growth in recent years, describing the APC as the dominant political force in the state with expanding membership and influence.
In his acceptance speech, Adeola thanked party leaders and stakeholders for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to justify their trust and work towards victory in the 2027 election.
The meeting drew a wide range of party stakeholders, including former governors Olusegun Osoba and Ibikunle Amosun, as well as serving and former lawmakers, party executives, and other influential figures.
With early endorsements now in place, the APC appears to be positioning itself for a unified campaign, even as Nigeria’s broader political landscape begins to shift ahead of the next general elections.
