A Nigerian Army commanding officer and six soldiers have been killed in Borno State after successfully repelling a terrorist attack, in an incident that underscores the ongoing risks faced by troops in the country’s North-East.
The military said the soldiers, part of Operation HADIN KAI, died following an encounter with insurgents in Monguno, where troops engaged attackers in a fierce gun battle and forced them to retreat.
According to a statement by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the attack occurred late on April 12, 2026, at a location identified as Charlie 13 within Sector 3 of the operation’s theatre.
Troops were said to have maintained control of the area after overpowering the assailants, preventing further escalation of the attack.
However, the situation took a tragic turn shortly after the firefight. The commanding officer, who had moved forward to assess the situation on the ground, was killed when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device (IED).
The explosion also claimed the lives of six other soldiers travelling with him, bringing the total number of fatalities to seven.
The military described the officer’s actions as a reflection of leadership and courage, noting that he had chosen to personally verify the safety and readiness of his troops despite the risks.
It said his decision to move to the frontline highlighted a commitment to duty and the welfare of his men, even after the immediate threat had been neutralised.
Operation HADIN KAI said it was mourning the loss of the fallen personnel, describing them as brave servicemen who paid the ultimate price in defence of the nation.
“Their sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the Armed Forces and the grateful nation they served,” the statement said.
Despite the losses, the military confirmed that troops remain in full control of the area, with operations continuing to prevent further attacks.
The latest incident highlights the persistent threat posed by insurgent groups in Borno State, where military forces continue to conduct operations against extremist elements across the region.
