A routine highway stop turned into a major drug bust after police operatives uncovered hard drugs cleverly hidden inside electric bulbs in Delta State.
Officers of the Safer Highway Patrol intercepted a Sienna vehicle along the Onicha-Ugbo/Ewohimi Road on April 13, 2026, leading to the arrest of a 47-year-old driver, Osuke Stephen, who was allegedly transporting illegal substances to Abuja.
Confirming the development, Delta State Police spokesperson Bright Edafe said the vehicle was stopped during an intelligence-led operation targeting suspicious movements along the route.
He explained that the bus, which was carrying passengers heading to northern Nigeria, was subjected to a detailed search after raising concerns among operatives on duty.
During the inspection, officers discovered illicit drugs concealed in an unusual manner—hidden inside electric energy bulbs, a tactic believed to be aimed at evading detection.
The recovered substances included approximately 490 grams of material suspected to be cocaine, along with 4 grams of a cannabis variant commonly referred to as “loud”.
Police said preliminary investigations indicate the drugs were being transported to Abuja, suggesting a wider distribution network may be involved.
The suspect is currently in police custody, while authorities have launched efforts to track down other individuals linked to the operation.
Security agencies say the interception highlights growing attempts by traffickers to use creative concealment methods, even as enforcement teams intensify surveillance on key transit routes across the country.
