Benue Security: Troops Arrest Suspected Terrorist in Gwer West Raid, Launch Wider Crackdown

Security forces in Benue State have intensified operations against armed groups, with troops of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) arresting a suspected terrorist during a targeted raid in Gwer West Local Government Area.

The arrest followed actionable intelligence pointing to the presence of a suspected criminal hiding in Tse Atu community. Acting swiftly, troops deployed under Sector 1 OPWS moved into the area, signalling a continued push to dismantle security threats across vulnerable communities.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, who disclosed the development, the operation took place on April 15, 2026, with personnel advancing from Anguhah and Umbagbo locations to execute the mission.

During the operation, one suspect was taken into custody without reported resistance. Troops also recovered a motorcycle believed to be connected to the suspect, raising further suspicions about mobility and possible links to criminal networks in the area.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect and the recovered item are currently in custody as investigations continue. Security operatives are working to determine the individual’s level of involvement and whether he is connected to broader terrorist or bandit activities.

The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by OPWS to disrupt armed groups operating in Benue and neighbouring states, where attacks on rural communities have remained a persistent concern.

Security sources say intelligence gathering is being expanded in the aftermath of the arrest, with a focus on identifying accomplices and preventing further threats.

While officials have yet to release detailed findings, the latest development underscores the military’s reliance on intelligence-led operations to target suspects and limit the movement of criminal elements in the region.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information that could aid ongoing operations and improve safety across affected communities.
