Panic in Plateau as Gunshots Rock Maraban Foron During Security Operation, Residents Flee, Injuries Reported

Fear swept through Maraban Foron in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State on Thursday evening after gunshots were reportedly fired during a security operation, forcing residents to flee in panic and abandon market activities.

The incident, which occurred around 7 pm, disrupted normal life in the community as the sound of gunfire triggered chaos and confusion across the area.

Eyewitness accounts suggest the operation involved a joint team of security operatives, allegedly including personnel of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), though authorities have not officially confirmed the details.

Residents said the situation escalated quickly as people ran in different directions to avoid being caught in what they feared could turn into an attack.

Some individuals reportedly sustained injuries while attempting to escape, particularly as the incident coincided with the community’s busy market day, forcing traders to shut down abruptly and abandon their goods.

Local sources described the moment as tense and unsettling, noting that memories of previous violent incidents in parts of Plateau State intensified the panic.

Community members said the sudden gunfire revived fears linked to past attacks in the region, with many initially believing the town was under assault.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Movement, Rwang Tenglong, confirmed the panic, saying the incident left several residents injured, although the exact circumstances surrounding the operation remain unclear.

He added that it was difficult to immediately verify who was arrested or the precise reason for the security activity at the time of reporting.

Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement, leaving residents uncertain and concerned about what triggered the operation.

The situation has since restored calm, but tension remains in the community as residents call for clearer communication and better coordination during security operations to prevent further panic.
