Tinubu Fires at Opposition, Declares Democracy Will Survive in Nigeria

Nigeria’s political tensions sharpened on Tuesday as President Bola Tinubu pushed back against critics, insisting that democracy in the country remains strong despite mounting challenges.

Speaking at the State House while receiving a delegation from Enugu State led by Governor Peter Mbah, the president struck a defiant tone, dismissing opposition voices and reaffirming his administration’s direction.

“Democracy will survive despite all intimidation. Ignore the naysayers. Stay focused,” Tinubu said, urging political allies not to be distracted by criticism or resistance.

He went further, accusing opposition figures of hypocrisy—arguing that some of those who claim to defend democratic values have, in practice, undermined them. The president also linked past policy decisions by previous leaders to ongoing structural challenges, particularly in the power sector.

“These are leaders who had privatised electricity, which is not working. They gave us darkness, and we are trying to get through it,” he said, framing current reforms as an attempt to correct inherited problems.

Tinubu maintained that criticism does not deter his administration, stressing that his focus remains on long-term national development and improving citizens’ welfare. “I do not lose sleep over criticism because we are committed to building a nation of bright hope for our children,” he added.

Beyond politics, the president highlighted Nigeria’s economic standing, describing the country as a key driver of growth and opportunity across Africa. He credited this position to the combined efforts of leaders at various levels of government.

He also emphasised the need for stronger collaboration, particularly at the grassroots, calling on state governments to deepen support for local government systems as part of a broader development strategy.

The remarks come at a time of heightened political activity and debate, with both the ruling party and opposition blocs increasingly positioning themselves ahead of future electoral contests.
