The long-awaited biopic of pop legend Michael Jackson has stormed the North American box office, opening with a powerful $97 million debut and instantly taking the number one spot.

Titled Michael, the film is directed by Antoine Fuqua and distributed by Lionsgate, charting Jackson’s journey from child performer to global music icon.

Starring in the lead role is Jaafar Jackson, the late singer’s nephew, whose portrayal has drawn intense global attention ahead of the film’s release.

Industry analysts say the opening marks a major milestone for musical biopics, with early momentum described as unusually strong for the genre.

“This is a record-shattering opening for a musical biography,” said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.

However, while audiences have responded positively to the nostalgia and emotional storytelling, critical reviews have been more divided. Some reviewers argue the film avoids deeper controversies surrounding the singer’s life.

“Most critics feel the film is superficial and avoids the complicated parts of the performer’s life, including allegations of sexual misbehaviour,” Gross noted, adding that a sequel is already being developed.

With earlier international releases included, Michael has now grossed nearly $220 million worldwide, according to Exhibitor Relations.

In second place, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie earned $21.2 million, continuing its strong global run after topping charts for several weeks. The animated sequel has now crossed $775 million worldwide.

Third place went to Amazon MGM’s sci-fi adventure Project Hail Mary, which added $13.2 million. The film, starring Ryan Gosling, has now reached nearly $600 million globally.

Warner Bros’ horror title The Mummy secured fourth place with $5.6 million, while A24’s romantic drama The Drama, featuring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, rounded out the top five with $2.6 million.

Further down the chart, Hoppers, You, Me & Tuscany, Over Your Dead Body, I Swear, and Normal completed the week’s top ten rankings.
