Amaechi Urges FG to Suspend Campaigns, Prioritise Security as Nigeria’s Insecurity Worsens

Rising insecurity across Nigeria has drawn sharp criticism from former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi, who says the country risks undermining its democracy if safety is not urgently restored.

Amaechi called on the Federal Government led by Bola Tinubu to immediately suspend ongoing election campaigns and focus on addressing the growing wave of violence.

He warned that the scale of killings, kidnappings and unrest now demands to be treated as a national emergency, rather than competing with political activities.

“There can be no meaningful elections if citizens do not feel safe in their own communities,” Amaechi said, highlighting the link between security and credible democratic processes.

The former minister argued that continuing campaigns in the midst of widespread fear risks deepening public frustration and eroding trust in government institutions.

He stressed that protecting lives and property must take precedence, noting that political engagement loses its value in an environment where citizens feel unsafe.

Amaechi’s remarks come amid increasing concern over Nigeria’s security challenges, which have continued to affect communities across different regions.

He insisted that restoring stability should be the immediate priority, adding that only a secure environment can guarantee credible elections and meaningful participation.
