A suspected armed offender slipped through police dragnet in Ogun State after abandoning a firearm and fleeing during a stop-and-search operation along the Ayetoro–Olodo Road.
The incident unfolded when officers of the Aiyetoro Area Command mounted a routine checkpoint as part of ongoing security operations aimed at curbing illegal arms movement and criminal activity in the area.
According to the Ogun State Police Command, the suspect was riding an unregistered Bajaj Boxer motorcycle when he noticed the operatives from a distance. He immediately attempted to escape the scene.
In a desperate bid to avoid arrest, the suspect reportedly dumped a single-barrel long gun and six live cartridges into a nearby bush before speeding off on the motorcycle.
Police spokesperson DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi confirmed the development, noting that the recovered weapons were quickly secured and transferred to the Command armoury for safe keeping and further investigation.
Authorities say the exhibits are now part of ongoing intelligence work aimed at tracing the suspect and uncovering possible links to wider criminal networks operating in the region.
Commissioner of Police in Ogun State, Bode Ojajuni, praised the officers involved in the operation, describing their response as alert and professional in preventing potentially dangerous weapons from circulating.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tightening security across the state and warned that possession of illegal firearms will continue to be met with strict enforcement action.
Investigations are ongoing as police intensify efforts to identify, track, and apprehend the fleeing suspect for prosecution.
