Fear has gripped residents of Ngbra Zongo community in Kwall District, Plateau State, after armed attackers stormed the area in the early hours of Friday, leaving at least 13 people dead and several others injured.
The assault, which occurred around midnight, threw the quiet rural settlement into chaos as residents woke up to gunfire and violent raids reportedly carried out by unknown gunmen.
Eyewitnesses say the attackers moved through the community with brutal precision, going from house to house and targeting residents in a coordinated wave of violence that lasted several minutes.
One resident, Philip Alanga, described how families were caught off guard as the assailants opened fire indiscriminately and used machetes on those attempting to flee. Many villagers escaped into nearby bushes, abandoning their homes in panic.
The attack left behind scenes of devastation, with injured survivors struggling to access medical help as fear spread across neighbouring settlements in the Kwall District.
Local leaders have condemned the incident in strong terms. The Secretary General of the Irigwe Development Association, Danjuma Auta, described the killings as barbaric and deeply tragic, calling for urgent intervention to prevent further loss of life.
Plateau State has witnessed repeated waves of violent attacks in recent weeks, intensifying concerns over worsening insecurity in rural communities often targeted by armed groups.
Security agencies are yet to issue a detailed official statement, but residents are demanding increased protection as fear continues to grow across affected areas.
