Tensions between the United States and Iran flared again after fresh military exchanges near the Strait of Hormuz, raising fears that a fragile ceasefire could collapse at any moment despite official claims it is still intact.
US President Donald Trump insisted the truce remains in place, even after Iranian forces reportedly launched missiles, drones, and small boats targeting American naval destroyers operating in the strategic waterway.
Washington said none of its warships were hit, but confirmed it responded with strikes on Iranian military positions, escalating already volatile conditions in one of the world’s most sensitive energy corridors.
Tehran, however, presented a different account, accusing US forces of initiating the latest confrontation by attacking vessels linked to Iran. Iranian officials said their response was immediate and defensive in nature.
The Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for global oil and gas shipments, has once again become the centre of geopolitical tension, with both sides trading blame over violations of the ceasefire agreement that began earlier in April.
Trump defended his position in Washington, maintaining that the ceasefire is still active while warning that the United States would respond with overwhelming force if Iran fails to comply with diplomatic expectations.
US Central Command stated that it acted purely in self-defence, saying its forces neutralised incoming threats and targeted Iranian facilities believed to be involved in the operation.
Regional anxiety has also grown, with the United Arab Emirates confirming that its air defence systems were activated to intercept missile and drone activity believed to have originated from Iran.
Despite the clashes, Trump has continued to signal openness to a broader agreement with Tehran, even as he warns that any further aggression would trigger a significantly stronger military response.
The situation now leaves the ceasefire hanging in uncertainty, with global markets and regional allies closely watching whether diplomacy can hold or whether the confrontation will spiral further.
