At least 30 people have been killed after heavily armed bandits launched a deadly ambush on travellers along the Magami–Dansadau highway in Zamfara State, in what has become one of the deadliest attacks on the route in 2026.
The attack occurred on Sunday evening when the gunmen reportedly opened fire on moving vehicles and commuters travelling between Magami and Gusau in a coordinated assault that triggered panic across the area.
Confirming the incident, Abubakar Gummi said the victims included civilians, local hunters and a member of the community protection guard.
According to him, “21 civilians, 8 local hunters, and one community protection guard were killed in the assault.”
Security operatives and members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard reportedly responded immediately, engaging the attackers in a fierce gun battle shortly after the ambush began.
Gummi disclosed that several bandits were also killed during the exchange of gunfire, although authorities have not released an official casualty figure for the attackers.
The Magami–Dansadau highway has remained one of the most dangerous routes in Zamfara South, with recurring attacks targeting travellers, farmers and traders despite ongoing military operations across the state.
The road serves as a major link between rural communities and Gusau, making it a critical but increasingly risky corridor for transportation and economic activity.
Security sources said bodies of the victims have been evacuated to nearby health facilities, while survivors injured during the attack are receiving treatment.
As of press time, the Zamfara State Government had not issued an official statement regarding the latest killings.
The attack adds to growing concerns over worsening insecurity in Nigeria’s North-West region, where armed groups continue to carry out mass abductions, village raids and highway ambushes despite intensified military offensives.
