Imo Police Deploy Tactical Unit After Failed Kidnap Attempt Along Ihiagwa-Eziobodo Road

The Imo State Police Command has intensified security operations in Ihiagwa and surrounding communities in Owerri West Local Government Area after suspected gunmen attempted to abduct a resident along the Umuokwo Ihiagwa/Eziobodo Road.

The failed abduction attempt occurred on the night of May 13, 2026, triggering a swift security response involving police operatives, local vigilante groups, and community members who reportedly mobilised in large numbers to confront the attackers.

In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, the police said the assailants were unable to carry out the abduction due to the rapid intervention and resistance mounted by security personnel and residents.

“Preliminary reports indicate that the assailants attempted to abduct a victim but were successfully resisted through the prompt intervention and collaborative efforts of Police operatives, local vigilante groups, and members of the community,” the statement said.

Despite the failed operation, the victim sustained a gunshot injury during the attack and was immediately taken to a hospital, where medical treatment is ongoing.

Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Audu Garba Bosso, ordered the immediate deployment of the newly established Violent Crime Response Unit alongside other tactical and intelligence teams to strengthen security presence across the affected communities.

The police command said intelligence-driven operations are currently underway to identify, track and arrest the suspects responsible for the attack, while additional security measures have been put in place to prevent further criminal activities in the area.

Residents were urged to remain calm but vigilant and report suspicious movements or persons to the nearest police station or through the emergency lines provided by the command.

The latest incident adds to growing security concerns across parts of Imo State, where authorities have continued efforts to tackle violent crimes, kidnappings and attacks targeting residents and security personnel.
