Political tension is mounting within the Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the emergence of Prince Alex Mbata as the party’s candidate for the Imo East Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 elections.
Mbata secured the APC ticket during the party’s primaries held on May 18, 2026, but his emergence has reportedly triggered dissatisfaction among influential political stakeholders across Owerri Zone, particularly within the Owerri Federal Constituency.
The growing opposition is linked to concerns over zoning and political balance within the district. Critics argue that Owerri North Local Government Area has already occupied the Senate seat for several years through the incumbent senator, Ezenwa Onyewuchi, and should not retain the position again in 2027.
Political leaders backing the agitation insist that other parts of the zone, especially Ngor Okpala, deserve an opportunity to produce a senator after years of what they describe as exclusion from key political offices.
Sources familiar with ongoing consultations disclosed that influential figures from the Emekuku, Egbu and Awaka political bloc are among those uncomfortable with the development. The bloc is believed to be weighing its political options as permutations ahead of the governorship succession battle begin to intensify.
A senior political stakeholder from Owerri Municipal, who requested anonymity, claimed there is now a strong push among leaders within the zone to support a candidate from Ngor Okpala during the general election.
According to the source, many stakeholders believe such a move would not only address longstanding complaints of marginalisation but also strengthen future political negotiations within the zone.
The development has further boosted conversations around the candidacy of Dr. Matthew Chima Amadi of the Action Peoples Party (APP), who has continued to gain visibility across the district.
Amadi’s support base reportedly expanded after the defeat of APC aspirant Dr. Chijioke Kaduru, a younger politician from Ngor Okpala who enjoyed significant backing from youths before losing the primary contest.
Several youth groups and political supporters within Ngor Okpala are now said to be rallying behind Amadi regardless of party affiliation, insisting the district must break what they see as a cycle of political dominance by other blocs in Owerri Zone.
Observers say the coming months may reshape the political equation in Imo East as alliances shift and parties reposition ahead of the 2027 elections.
