Davido Reveals Retirement Plan, Says He Wants to Buy Back His Music Masters From Sony

Afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about his long-term business plans in music, revealing that he intends to regain ownership of his music catalogue from Sony Music Entertainment before eventually stepping away from the industry.

The award-winning singer made the revelation during an appearance on The Long Form Podcast, where he spoke about the importance of ownership, royalties and building lasting wealth beyond fame.

Davido explained that while he currently enjoys a strong relationship with his record label, controlling his masters remains one of his biggest career goals. According to him, ownership gives artists long-term financial power and security long after active music careers end.

“I have a good music contract. But the most important thing is ownership. I plan to get my masters back from Sony soon,” the singer said during the interview.

The “Unavailable” crooner added that he intends to use his music catalogue as a legacy asset for his children by assigning royalties from specific songs to them in the future.

“With that I can give each of my kid songs they will keep earning royalties from even after I retire,” he explained.

The comments reflect a growing trend among global artists pushing to reclaim ownership of their music catalogues, publishing rights and streaming royalties in an industry where labels traditionally control masters for decades.

In recent years, conversations around music ownership have intensified worldwide, with many artists publicly stressing the need for creatives to understand contracts, publishing splits and long-term royalty structures before signing deals.

Davido also used the podcast appearance to advise younger artists to pay close attention to the business side of entertainment, warning that talent alone is not enough to build lasting success in the music industry.

Over the years, the Nigerian star has evolved from a chart-topping performer into a global Afrobeats brand, securing international partnerships, sold-out tours and major endorsement deals while expanding his influence far beyond music.
