Don Jazzy Says Signing With Mavin Records Does Not Guarantee Global Success

Nigerian music executive Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly known as Don Jazzy, has said that signing with his record label does not guarantee an artist will achieve global success or generate huge profits.

The Mavin Records boss made the remarks during a recent livestream with popular forex trader Habby Forex, where he discussed the risks involved in both the music industry and financial trading.

Don Jazzy described the music business as risky, although he noted that it was not as volatile as forex trading. He explained that not every artist signed to his label would become an international star or earn the company significant revenue.

“The forex market is just something I do for fun. Music still takes most of my time, and my other businesses are not as volatile and risky as the forex market,” he said.

The music executive stressed that success should not be measured solely by an artist’s ability to achieve worldwide fame or generate substantial financial returns for a record label.

According to him, an artist’s personal and professional growth is also an important measure of success. He said that if a musician improves after joining Mavin Records, that progress should be recognised, even if the artist does not become a global star.

“But not every artist I signed will become global. Just like in trading, there is risk in the music business, too. But to us, as long as you are better today than yesterday as an artist, you are a success,” Don Jazzy said.

The producer and entrepreneur has played significant roles in the careers of several Nigerian music stars, including D’Banj, Tiwa Savage, Rema and Ayra Starr, who have achieved varying levels of success in the industry.

His comments highlight the uncertainties of developing musical talent and the challenges record labels face in turning investments in artists into commercial success.
