Political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections are beginning to intensify in Imo State, with a diaspora coalition throwing its weight behind former Deputy Governor Eze Madumere for the Imo East Senatorial seat.
The endorsement, announced by members of the Owerri Zone diaspora community, signals growing momentum around Madumere’s expected bid to represent Imo East Senatorial District in the National Assembly under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
In a statement released to journalists by Ezenta Chibuike Ejimkonye, the group said its decision followed extensive consultations among members living in different countries.
According to the diaspora body, Madumere’s political experience, leadership profile and years in public service make him one of the strongest contenders for the Owerri Zone Senate seat ahead of 2027.
The group highlighted his previous role as Deputy Governor of Imo State, arguing that his experience in governance has prepared him for effective legislative representation at the federal level.
Members also described him as accessible, accountable and deeply connected to grassroots communities across Owerri Zone, adding that the district needs experienced representation capable of defending the interests of the people in Abuja.
The statement further stressed that the former deputy governor possesses the exposure and competence needed to attract development projects, youth empowerment programmes and infrastructural growth to the senatorial district.
The diaspora supporters called on indigenes of Owerri Zone, both within Nigeria and abroad, to rally behind Madumere’s ambition and work collectively towards securing victory for him in the 2027 election.
They maintained that his emergence would usher in what they described as renewed hope, inclusive development and stronger legislative advocacy for communities within Imo East Senatorial District.
Political observers say endorsements from diaspora groups are increasingly becoming influential in Imo politics, especially as politicians seek broader support networks ahead of the next election cycle.
