Nigerian singer BNXN has sparked fresh debate online after claiming that living in Lagos costs more than living in parts of the United States.
The Afrobeats star, formerly known as Buju, made the remarks during a TikTok livestream where he opened up about his recent relocation to the US and compared the cost of daily life abroad with his experience in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
According to the singer, one of the biggest differences he noticed after moving was the absence of constant financial pressure from people around him.
“I was telling someone, since I got to the United States, nobody has asked me to give them money. And people are also suffering here,” BNXN said during the livestream.
The ‘Finesse’ crooner argued that while accommodation in cities like Los Angeles remains expensive, other aspects of daily life are more manageable compared to Lagos.
“Lagos is super expensive. It is more expensive than Los Angeles. Aside from housing, every other thing in LA is not expensive,” he said.
The singer also disclosed that he currently spends about $12,000 monthly on rent in the United States, adding that life there feels more structured because people mainly focus on paying their bills without the extra social and financial pressures often experienced in Lagos.
“Here you just pay your rent, and you’re good,” he added.
BNXN’s comments have already triggered mixed reactions on social media, with many Nigerians agreeing that the rising cost of living in Lagos has become unbearable. Others, however, argued that comparing Lagos with Los Angeles depends heavily on lifestyle, income level, and location.
The conversation comes amid growing concerns over inflation, housing costs, transportation expenses and economic hardship across Nigeria, especially in major cities like Lagos and Abuja.
