Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has distanced itself from a controversial statement circulating online and allegedly issued in its name regarding comments linked to former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation described the publication as unauthorized and misleading, insisting that it did not originate from its leadership or any of its official communication channels.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, the group said it became aware of a purported press release making rounds in the media space and social media platforms concerning national political issues involving Obi.
Ohanaeze stressed that the views expressed in the disputed publication do not reflect the position of the organisation under the leadership of Sen. Azuta Mbata.
The organisation reiterated that it is neither a political platform nor a spokesperson for any political party, candidate or interest group. According to the statement, Ohanaeze remains committed to its mandate as a socio-cultural body focused on promoting the unity, welfare and advancement of the Igbo people within the Nigerian federation.
It further warned members of the public against relying on statements issued by individuals or groups claiming to speak for the organisation without proper authorisation. The leadership described such actions as deliberate attempts to exploit the respected name of Ohanaeze for partisan interests and personal gain.
Condemning what it called recurring efforts to drag the organisation into political controversies, Ohanaeze said those behind the fake statements were attempting to mislead the public and undermine the unity of purpose for which the body stands.
The group also clarified its official leadership structure, noting that Prince Okey Nwadinobi serves as Deputy President-General, while Emeka Sibeudu is the Secretary-General of the organisation.
Ohanaeze urged journalists, stakeholders and members of the public to verify information through its recognised communication channels and disregard any publication not officially endorsed by its leadership.
