
A major rescue operation is underway after a building collapsed in Lagos on Thursday, leaving several people feared trapped beneath the rubble as emergency responders race against time to reach victims.
The incident, which occurred around 11:40 a.m., sent shockwaves through the affected community and forced residents and business owners to flee nearby structures amid fears of additional collapses.
Eyewitnesses said the building suddenly gave way without warning, triggering panic across the neighbourhood. Moments after the collapse, residents, traders and passers-by rushed toward the scene while others scrambled to safety as dust and debris filled the area.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not confirmed the number of casualties or those trapped inside the collapsed structure. Rescue workers were still conducting search-and-rescue operations to determine the scale of the disaster.
The incident disrupted normal activities in the area, with traffic and commercial operations affected as emergency personnel cordoned off the scene and began recovery efforts.
Confirming the development, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said emergency responders had immediately commenced rescue operations.
