2027: Peter Obi Vows to Serve Only One Term, Says Four Years Is Enough to Reset Nigeria

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has reaffirmed his commitment to serving only one term if elected president in the 2027 general election, insisting that four years would be enough to lay a solid foundation for the country’s recovery.

The former Anambra State governor made the declaration during an exclusive interview on Sunday Politics with Seun Okinbaloye, where he dismissed suggestions that his one-term pledge was merely a campaign strategy to win votes.

Obi’s remarks come days after his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, revealed that both leaders had reached an agreement for Obi to serve a single four-year term if they secure victory at the polls.

Addressing the issue, Obi confirmed the existence of the agreement, stressing that it was built on mutual trust and must be respected.

“It was an agreement. As gentlemen, we must respect it,” Obi said.

The NDC presidential candidate maintained that he has no desire to remain in office beyond four years, arguing that decisive leadership—not the length of time spent in power—is what Nigeria needs.

“I don’t need more than four years to show the path Nigeria will take. It’s a simple thing,” he stated.

Reiterating his position, Obi left no room for speculation about a possible second-term ambition.

“And I say it again: I will serve for four years — full stop. If you want me, it’s four years, full stop — not a day more,” he declared.

His comments are expected to fuel political debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election, as parties continue to unveil their strategies and campaign promises while seeking to win over voters across the country.
