One Feared Dead as Armed Robbers Strike Again on Onitsha–Enugu Expressway, Panic Grips Motorists

Fresh fears have emerged along the Onitsha–Enugu Expressway after another suspected armed robbery attack on the Nawfia axis reportedly claimed one life, raising fresh concerns over the security of one of South-East Nigeria’s busiest highways.

The latest incident has sparked renewed calls for urgent intervention by the Anambra State Government and security agencies, as motorists and residents warn that criminal attacks along the route are becoming more frequent and dangerous.

A social media user who raised the alarm alleged that residents of Nawfia community have repeatedly complained about armed robbers targeting travellers on the expressway. According to the source, the attackers often exploit isolated sections of the road to ambush unsuspecting motorists.

Determined to improve security, members of the community recently carried out an environmental clean-up along the affected stretch of the highway. During the exercise, thick bushes were cleared and logs allegedly used by criminals to block the road and trap vehicles were removed.

Despite those efforts, residents claim the attacks have continued, with the latest incident reportedly ending in tragedy. A video circulating on social media is said to show the aftermath of the attack, in which one person was allegedly killed. However, authorities have not independently confirmed the reported casualty.

Concerned residents have urged security agencies to strengthen surveillance on the expressway by increasing patrols, identifying suspected criminal hideouts, and sustaining coordinated operations to deter further attacks.

They also appealed to the Anambra State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, the military, and other security agencies to take immediate action to restore confidence among commuters using the strategic highway.

As of the time of filing this report, the Anambra State Police Command had not issued an official statement on the reported attack or confirmed the circumstances surrounding the incident.
