APC, ADC Clash Over Tinubu’s Educational Credentials, Constitutional Requirements Ahead of 2027

Fresh political arguments have emerged over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s educational credentials, with members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) disagreeing over what the Nigerian Constitution requires for elective office.

The debate played out on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, where representatives of both parties exchanged opposing views on the President’s academic qualifications and the constitutional provisions governing eligibility for public office.

Speaking during the programme, ADC chieftain Kalu Kalu challenged President Tinubu to publicly disclose the names of the primary and secondary schools he attended. He argued that Nigerians deserve clarity on the President’s educational background as discussions around qualifications continue ahead of the 2027 general election.

Responding on behalf of the APC, party member Alwan Hassan defended the President, insisting that the Constitution does not specifically require candidates to present primary or secondary school certificates.

Hassan maintained that the constitutional requirement is possession of a school certificate or its equivalent, adding that the equivalent includes the ability to read and write. He argued that the law should be interpreted based on its provisions rather than political sentiment.

The exchange adds to the growing political debate surrounding candidates’ educational qualifications and official documentation as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.

With campaigns gradually gathering momentum, issues relating to constitutional eligibility, transparency and documentation are expected to remain key talking points among political parties and the electorate.
