Two Die as Flood Ravages Communities in Yobe After Heavy Rainfall

Two persons have been confirmed dead following a flood that swept through Malari, Pompomari and surrounding communities in Damaturu Local Government Area of Yobe State after a heavy downpour on Sunday.

The incident was disclosed in a Flash Flood Incident Report issued by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).

According to the report, the victims were identified as Isa Haruna, 38, a security personnel attached to Mallam Matari, and Abba Kyari, 18, who reportedly drowned in the Pompomari area.

The agency said its Search and Rescue Team, working alongside the Yobe State Fire Service in Damaturu, responded promptly after receiving reports of the incident.

“Upon arrival at the scene, the victims were confirmed dead and their bodies were conveyed to the mortuary at the General Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital, Damaturu,” the report stated.

SEMA issues flood safety advisory

Following the tragedy, the State Emergency Management Agency urged residents to remain vigilant and observe flood safety measures, especially as schools are currently on vacation.

The agency advised parents and guardians to closely monitor children and prevent them from playing near rivers, culverts and flood-prone areas.

SEMA also outlined key precautionary measures for residents, including:

Avoid flooded roads and waterways.
Keep children away from rivers and drainage channels.
Report emergencies promptly to SEMA.
Clear blocked drainage systems.
Stay updated on weather advisories.
Move to higher ground during flooding and avoid contact with contaminated floodwater.

The agency noted that an assessment of the flood’s impact is ongoing, adding that the extent of property damage in the affected communities has yet to be determined.
