Kebbi State Governor, Nasir Idris, has assured the families of 10 police officers killed during a gun battle with suspected bandits in Sakaba Local Government Area that the state government will stand by them.

Idris gave the assurance at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi while receiving a delegation from the Nigeria Police Force led by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Operations, Umar Shehu-Nadada.

The officers were killed during an encounter with suspected bandits along the Rafin Makuku axis of Sakaba LGA. Police operatives had reportedly intercepted the armed group while they were moving between Zamfara and Kebbi states.

The Nigeria Police Force said 17 suspected bandits were neutralised during the operation, while four motorcycles belonging to the attackers were destroyed. Two civilians were also killed, while two police officers sustained injuries.

The governor expressed condolences to the police and the families of the fallen officers, noting that the personnel had been deployed to support other security agencies in the fight against terrorism and other criminal activities.

Idris said supporting families of security personnel who die in the line of duty was part of the state’s tradition. “It is our tradition in Kebbi to assist the families of fallen officers who died in the line of duty,” he said, assuring the families that the government would provide support during the difficult period.

The governor also pledged continued backing for security agencies operating across Kebbi, saying his administration would not allow any part of the state to be taken over by terrorists or other criminal groups.

The police delegation conveyed the condolences of Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to the governor, Kebbi residents and the families of the deceased officers. The DIG, Umar Shehu-Nadada, said security forces would continue efforts to locate those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice.
